Style defined: What does cut on the bias mean?




To cut a garment "on the bias" means to cut diagonally across the grain or "cross-grain" of a piece of material instead of along or against it. A bias cut give a piece of clothing more fluidity and stretch and looks amazing along the curves of a body. However, a bias cut is not an easy one as fabric tends to gather and lose shape while being sewn if the garment is not handled properly. A designer famed for her exquisite pieces cut on the bias is Madeleine Vionnet who introduced it to the world in the 1920's.
